Hiiiiiii <3
I spent 8 days in Denmark and it was seriously amazing. I just started working at this cool Danish startup, and they send over employees as part of onboarding. I went over a few days early for a solo trip, and a friend met up with me at the end of my trip. All in all, Denmark was an incredible experience, and I wanted to give you some of my lessons and travel trips.
One thing that stuck out to me was how normal it felt to be going to Europe. When I flew to Italy last year, it was legitimately the biggest deal ever. It was so cool to me how much I had learned from my first trip by myself abroad last year. I really have come a long way in a short period of time.
It was also cool knowing I would be back to Europe two months post Denmark. It's a really good feeling to know I created a life for myself where I prioritize travel. I love that I've created a life for myself where I can go to the places I want to go because I want to go, instead of waiting for someone else to buy in or go with me.
I do plan on getting into a relationship when the time is right, so we will see how solo travel shifts as my life changes, but I think I will always integrate it into a part of my life somehow. It's taught me the foundations of how to love and respect myself, and for that I am incredibly grateful.
I set a one word intention before embarking on my trip to Denmark; trust.
The process of going on the trip had a few initial speed bumps. My petsitter got covid and I needed to find alternative care last minute. My airbnb got cancelled the day before as well. I said on several occasions that I had never felt more unprepared to leave the country.
When I was in Italy, I had a few panic attacks. They were mostly surrounding Covid restrictions and needing a negative test to reenter the United States. It was so hard for me to wrap my head around the idea that I could follow my heart and be rewarded for it. My trauma conditioning had taught me that joy came at a cost down the line, so my anxiety had been a tool for keeping my happiness in check.
I made the conscious decision to abandon this line of thinking, at least for the 8 days when I was in Denmark. It actually worked.
I adapted a mantra there.. "just for today, I will not worry." It may sound basic, but this tiny mantra helped me significantly throughout the overall context of the trip. I didn't have a single panic attack.
I was flexible with myself and my routine. I journaled when I had time, meditated when I could and practiced moments of mindfulness and stillness when things got particularly busy.
Here are my practical suggestions for anyone looking to take a trip to Denmark:
♥️Download the app TAXA 4x35 to request cabs- they don’t use Uber/Lyft in Copenhagen
♥️I stayed at @zokucopenhagen and LOVED IT- it’s 3 stops on the metro from city center but I loved the coworking space / unique concept of the lofts and would definitely stay here again !
♥️ Speaking of metro, the train is seriously so clean and so safe; it was so nice it reminded me of an airport tram compared to what I’m used to on the subway
♥️I also stayed at The Strand - amazing location and there are trampolines in the ground outside! They also have amazing bathtubs and breakfast!
♥️I borrowed a bike from my hotel to get to and from work- highly recommend checking out the bikes when you are here! It’s such a fun way to explore the city and the streets are made for it
♥️ This is jetlag 101 but I forced myself to stay up until 9pm on the day I arrived and I was acclimated to the time change within one day
♥️💚 Christianshavn is the hipster / alternative part of town and it’s so cool.. they have their own flag / laws and the police don’t go there; it’s very trippy! On the sign at the entrance when you go back to the city it says “you are now entering the EU”
♥️There’s an amazing food market called Reffen- you can get cuisine from all over the world.. the Indian food was incredible as well as the Apple Cider
♥️I paid $10 per day through my carrier to have cell service - I believe they cap it at $100 in one month but check with your provider
♥️ The shopping is top notch- definitely check out @bakkekildecph if you can; it’s where I got my jacket / Chanel bags and the surrounding shopping streets are prime as well
♥️ Nyhavn is where you see all the pretty colored houses and it’s known as the tourist area
Here are my key mindset takeaways from my time in Denmark
✈️ Life is what you make it; I had the opportunity to explore Denmark because I left a few days early, otherwise the trip would have been 90% working
💕 Worrying is legitimately fruitless; what's going to happen, will happen; I firmly believe that the universe has your back
🌟Immersing yourself in a new culture where you don't speak the language is refreshing; it helps you connect to yourself in a way that's difficult to describe, but I felt like my brain got a rest
😂 Spending money in a foreign country is still spending money... lol
